The Service starts with the church lit by candlelight. After each reading one of the candles in the front of the church is extinguished. The Christ candle is extinguished following the reading of Psalm 22 which Jesus quoted on the cross.

The purpose of the service is to recreate the betrayal, abandonment and the agony of the events. It is left unfinished because the story isn’t over until Easter Day.
